Julep Joan Swatches and Review

If you saw my recent Julep Haul you will be familiar with this one.  This is Joan from the February "It Girl" box and I had to try it first.
Julep Joan
Julep describes Joan as a "raspberry plum with rose gold shimmer".  The gold shimmer isn't quite as apparent on the nail as it is in the bottle.  You really have to be in the perfect light to see it.  This is a lovely shade, but it's one of those polishes that looks a bit different on the nail than in the bottle.

The consistency of this polish is pretty thick and opaque.  I could have gotten away with one coat, but I like how a second coat evens it out better.

Now silly me, I forgot to use the "gel type" top coat that came in the box (I used the Revlon Color Stay).  Perhaps that would have solved another problem I had with this.  It looks shiny in these photos, because I took photos last night right after I painted them.  But when I woke up, I noticed that the nail polish ate my top coat.  It was rough and dull.  If you are looking for more of a matte polish, you may like it...but I am not the biggest matte fan.

I'm curious to see if the top coat that they provided will help keep it as shiny as it is when you first apply it.  I will try it and get back to you.

All in all; it's a pretty color, but unless you like the matte look or the top coat helps, I wouldn't recommend it.

Have you tried this one yet?  If so, does your top coat work better?

  1. I think this one looks stunning! Reminds me of ChG Ahoy. The pics make the shimmer look very apparent on the nail, but not in the bottle, weird! Too bad about the topcoat eating!

    1. Yes, the shimmer really does depend on the light in both the bottle and the nail.

  2. Beautiful color! Love it! I like how you always have your nails against a sweater, you have kind of a signature thing going there. Hope you have a great weekend!

    1. I like doing it so there is more color in the photo and it shows off the nail color a bit more. Others have said they don't want to do it because they think it's my "signature" but I really don't mind - anyone is welcome to do it. That's what we are here for, to share ideas and beautiful polish:)

  3. Hi Essie, when I saw your post showing us your latest Julep Box I was super curious to see what this polish will look like on your nails - it is lovely!!!!! I also experienced a couple of very nail-shy shimmers but found them adding a very particular glow to the nails. Also the Top Coat experience is not unknown to me. I usually simply add a second layer of Top Coat the next morning. And by then all the previous layers are so hardened that the second layer of Top Coat rarely gets eaten up. Have a lovely weekend xxx

    1. Yes, I should have added another coat the next morning. It does look really pretty on the nail, like it has more depth. It's just crazy how it can look so different than it does in the bottle. I am excited to see if the top coat Julep included in the box will help.

  5. I LOVE the gold shimmer! This reminds me of a raspberry smoothie. It's gorgeous on you, and looks so great with the light grey :)

  7. I am not very familiar with Julep polishes but this one looks great! Too bad it dulled the day after. There's a whole Italian brand that acts like that on me and it's really pissing me off! I don't really think it's a matter of the top coat.

  8. This is my favorite color! I use Out The Door top coat, and it turns out beautifully and didn't dull the the next day. I would try a different top coat.
